In directories, the most important consideration is the long term maximum capacity, including longest message line and maximum number of messages. Then think about message size. Standard letter sizes are 1/4" and 1/2". Directories can be standard or highly custom.
Maps can vary widely in style and complexity. Many are now generated on computer, output in one or multiple colors, in varying sizes, and stored on disk for later updates, by client or vendor. When thoughtfully planned, maps can aid visitors to understand larger facilities. Coding of areas, using color or alpha-numerics helps as well. Maps can also be combined with strip directories of destinations. Where space allows, consider units that allow the maps to be displayed horizontally.
